Microwave....Day 2

Objectives:
By the end of today's class, you will be able to:
--recognize what the various microwave settings mean.
--understand how a microwave functions.
--identify what food layouts cook most effectively.

Instructions:

1. Locate the video rack on the back classroom door and find the video "Zap It: What You Don't Know about Microwaves".
2. Using the same piece of paper from yesterday, space down several lines and write
"Activity 2". Answer the following questions about the video using complete sentences that explain what the question is asking.
--A. From the video, explain how a microwave works.
--B. What makes the sound of the microwave oven when it is cooking?
--C. Why do sealed containers or foods with an outside membrane (hot dog, egg) explode when they are heated in microwave oven?
--D. How deeply do microwaves penetrate food?
--E. Why are veggies more nutritious when they are cooked in a microwave oven...there are two reasons?
--F. List four good coverings for food in the microwave.
--G. List three things that affect how fast a food cooks in a microwave.
--H. T/F Microwaves are the same no matter what the power level.
--I. T/F The power level refers to what percent of the time the microwaves are shut off.
--J. T/F Parts of food that cook the fastest should be in the center of the microwave container.
--K. T/F Corners cook slowest.
--L. T/F If I double a recipe, I should double the time in the microwave.
--M. T/F If I cook two potatoes instead of one, I should double the time in the microwave.
3. When you have completed the questions, go back and complete "Activity 1", then the experiment.
4. If you finished number 3 above, locate the worksheet, "Microwave Maze" from the blue milkcrate. Complete the lower half first; then work on the word search.
