Microwave...Day 1

This six-day Microwave module is an overview of how a microwave works, methods for using the microwave safely, and what procedures and utensils work best while using the microwave. Overall, the student will be able to:
---describe how microwave cooking differs from conventional cooking.
---describe the operation of a microwave oven.
---list four factors that affect cooking time in a microwave oven.
---explain the purpose of covering food in the microwave.
---list five advantages and disadvantages of microwave cooking.
---prepare a recipe in the microwave that demonstrates defrosting, cooking, and melting of food.

Objectives:
By the end of today's class, you should:
--be able to explain how a microwave works.

Instructions:

1. If you have not already taken the Microwave pretest on Mygradebook.com, go back there and do so now.
2. Locate the textbook, Adventures in Food and Nutrition. Read carefully pages 110-113 and page 122.
3. Put the FACS header in the upper right corner of a clean piece of paper. On the top left line,write "Activity 1" and answer the following questions in complete sentences. Remember: points will be taken off for incomplete sentences and illegible (can't be read) work.
--A. What part of a microwave oven converts electricity into microwaves?
--B. What causes the food to heat in a microwave oven?
--C. Describe three differences between a microwave oven and a conventional oven.
--D. Foods cook faster in a microwave oven when _____.
-----1. large amounts of food are cooked.
-----2. food is cut into square chunks.
-----3. food is placed near the side of the oven.
-----4. food contains little fat.
--E. Rub your hands together quickly. Study the diagram below called "How a Microwave Works". Explain what happens in the picture and how that is related to microwave cooking.
--F. Look at the chart in the yellow box on page 112. Answer the question "what might happen if you cooked foods at power settings higher than the ones given?" (use as an example "defrosting frozen foods")
--G. What advice would you give someone who wants to prepare muffins in a microwave oven?
--H. Explain why microwaves are so easy to clean.
--I. Explain why you should wipe up spills and spatters from the microwave oven.
4. It's time for an experiment. In the foods lab, locate two measuring cups of the same size and fill each with one cup of water. Place one cup in the center of the microwave and the second cup on the outside perimeter of the tray. Heat both on high (10 Power Setting) for 1.5 minutes. Using a potholder, take the cups out of the microwave and measure the water temperature with a thermometer.
--J. Which cup of water was hotter? Explain why.
5. Clean up your module area stacking the books neatly. Restart the computer. Push your chair under the desk.

Microwave....Day 6

Today's Objective: After completing today's activities, you will be able to:
-prepare a simple recipe using the microwave oven.
-complete basic kitchen clean-up.

Instructions:
1. Locate the recipe for Pizza Nachos in the kitchen recipe notebook.
2.Do the following:
--Wash your hands.
-- Put on an apron.
-- Locate the needed equipment and utensils...they should be in the drainer.
-- The meat is in the freezer, the sauce and cheese are in the fridge.
-- Prepare your Pizza Nachos as described in recipe.
-- Place one cup of chips on each plate.
-- Spread the meat mixture on top.
-- Sprinkle with cheese.
-- Microwave again to melt the cheese.
3. Wash all the items you used in the kitchen very well. Look at the picture of what a clean kitchen and microwave look like.
4. You and your partner may prepare a drink for yourselves IF your area is cleaned up and there is time left in the class period. This is one recipe that may not be shared with the class.

1 1/2 quart casserole
Large spoon
Recipe

Cutting board
Forks
Paper plates, napkins, and cups

Microwave....Day 5

Today's Objectives:
By the end of today's class, you will be:
--prepared to cook in the foods lab during the next class period
--have an idea of what the future of microwaves will be.

Instructions:
1. First, you should have already taken the Microwave posttest on mygradebook.com. If you have not done so, go back to mygradebook.com and complete it. The posttest does count as part of your grade.
2. Locate an Upcoming Events sheet in the blue milkcrate. Below, you will find the recipe for what you will cook tomorrow in the foods lab. Using the recipe for guidance, complete the worksheet in complete sentences. Give the worksheet to your instructor when you are done.


3. Locate the textbook, Adventures in Food and Nutrition, and turn to page 121. Read about the future of microwaves.
4. Brainstorm! On the worksheet you have been using for the microwave module:
--summarize the article and what the future of the microwave might be.
--what is your reaction to that future.
--do some Internet research about the future of the microwave and report your findings.
5. Complete any unfinished work from the previous days' activities.
6. Clean up and organize your module area.

Microwave....Day 4

Objectives:
By the end of today's lesson:
--you will understand how to use a microwave safely.

Instructions:

1. Locate the textbook, Adventures in Food and Nutrition. Read pages 118-120 (start at "Microwave Oven Safety"). Also, study the FACT SHEET (click on "FACT SHEET") at the end of this activity.



2. Go back to mygradebook.com and locate the Microwave Safety Test and take it. You must make a 100 on this quiz to cook because it is a safety test. So study any mistakes you make and retake the quiz.
3. It is time for an experiment. Go to the blue milkcrate and get the worksheet from the microwave folder called "Investigating Microwaves". Follow the instructions and complete the worksheet.

4. Complete any unfinished work from the previous days' activities.
5. Clean up and organize your module area.

Microwave....Day 3

Objectives:
By the end of today's class, you will be able to:
--understand the importance of using the correct microwave cookware.

Instructions:

1. Locate the textbook, Adventures in Food and Nutrition, and read carefully pages 114-118.
2. Using the paper you used in previous assignments, drop down several lines and write "Activity 3".
3. After you have completed the assigned reading about microwave cookware and how to use the microwave effectively, answer the following questions in complete sentences.
--A. Which type of cookware is safe to use in the microwave oven?
--B. Explain in your own words why each of the following types of cookware is NOT good for the microwave.
-----a. Dishes with silver trim.
-----b. Aluminum pans
-----c. Bread wrapper ties
--C. Explain why sealed containers may explode in a microwave oven.
--D. Explain why you would wipe up spills and spatters from the microwave oven.
--E. Give three tips for avoiding explosion in the microwave oven.
4. It is time for an experiment. In Foods Lab 3, locate the basket of dishware marked "Microwave Oven". Select three containers to test their microwavability.
--A. Place each container container in the microwave oven. Place a cup of water on top of the container.
--B. Set the microwave on "high" and cook for one minute.
--C. Carefully touch the container. If it feels cook, it is safe to use in a microwave oven. If it feels warm or hot, it is not safe to use .
--D. Record your findings for the three pieces of cookware at the bottom of your worksheet.
5. Complete any unfinished work from the previous days' activities.
6. Clean up and organize your module area. Reboot your computer.
